Revisionist works also tend to not focus on “shipping”, or the act of putting two characters who are not in a relationship in canon together in fanfiction. This type of fanfiction differs from others because it does not simply put beloved characters into new situations or play in the detailed world of canon. Revisionist fanfiction is a type of work in which authors attempt to “fix”, or revise, the original canon. While there are many different types of genres or classifications found in fanfiction, revisionist is not a title often seen because it speaks of an overarching type of fanfiction rather than a single, specific classification. The biggest question is whether or not these works can still be considered to be A Song of Ice and Fire or Game of Thrones if the plot and characterization drastically move away from the original canon? It is also possible to develop the genre conventions of this particular genre. By having examples in one central location, it is now possible to analyze these works and create a larger understanding of why authors write these types of works. The purpose of this anthology is to put together a collection of works that are part of a genre that is largely unexplored. Many ASOIAF/GOT fanfictions attempt to “fix” the story, changing the original plot to examine what would have happened if a certain character did or did not die. This anthology focuses on the A Song of Ice and Fire and Game of Thrones fandoms, and examines how fans react to the original plot lines. Fanfiction can be written about any media, including television shows, movies, books, even graphic novels. Fandoms, or collective groups of fans centered around a single work, collaborate on fanfictions and create a central identity. Although fanfiction has been around for many years, with the introduction of the internet it has become widespread and less of a marginalized entity.
